Quantum Week in Mainz

We are delighted to announce that the arrangements for the REMOLD Summer School have been finalized and that the topic for this year will be error correction for quantum computers. The event will take place from the 21st until the 25th of September at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, and is organized by REMOLD PI Jens Niklas Eberhardt and Estelle Bonmann, whom we thank for their hospitality and effort.

We also include a word from the organizers about the Quantum Week, along with more detailed information about the content:

Quantum computers need error correction. Surprisingly, some of the most important methods to construct good quantum error correcting codes come from pure mathematics: homological and homotopical algebra, algebraic geometry, representation theory, buildings and their quotients, and parts of the Langlands program, in particular the Jacquet–Langlands correspondence.

This is what we will focus on in this summer school. In particular, we will see how objects like hyperbolic manifolds, Coxeter groups, Bruhat–Tits buildings, expander graphs and higher-dimensional expanders can be used to encode the state of a quantum system and protect it against errors, and how cohomology operations such as the Pontryagin square allow one to compute with the encoded state.

We are also very happy that we will be able to visit the Analogrechnermuseum in Bad Schwalbach on Wednesday, a collection of around seventy working analog computers.

Speakers

Nikolas P. Breuckmann (University of Bristol) — Quantum error correction
Louis Golowich (UC Berkeley) — Expanders and quantum codes
Bertrand Rémy (ENS de Lyon) — Buildings
Vincent Steffan (IQM Quantum Computers) — Quantum codes in hardware

Venue

Hilbertraum, Institut für Mathematik, Staudingerweg 9, 55128 Mainz

Participants should plan to arrive in Mainz on Sunday 20 September and leave on Friday or Saturday.
